Lewis and Clark Focus Day

What a day! We got a late start today after various delays, but finally made it on the road to Seaside to see the Salt Works, the site where Lewis and Clark sent 3 men to make salt for the return trip, and then to Astoria to see Fort Clatsop, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition stayed the winter in 1805-'06.

After the Fort, we went into downtown Astoria and split up for lunch. Some of us had fish and chips at the best place-Bowpicker. Their fish was Albacore Tuna instead of cod and it was delicious!! We ate outside since the Bowpicker was actually a fixed up fishing boat.

After lunch, we took the kids across the Astoria Bridge (@4miles long!) into Washington. We were really excited when we thought we saw a whale, but then were really disappointed when we realized it was only a large log floating by. Once in Washington, we turned around and headed back into Oregon.

We visited the Astoria Column, a tall tower with 164 spiral steps. The students ran all the way up! On top on the observation deck, some of us were able to fly some balsa wood gliders. One stayed up for several minutes! It was so fun to watch! Some students were so excited to see the gliders being thrown off the top of the tower, they started asking about other various items they might be allowed to throw. After getting "no" repeated to them until we sounded like a broken record, they stopped asking and just went down the stairs.

From there, we drove the 2 hours back to the beach house where the students went back to spend some time on the beach. We thought tonight would be warmer than last, but the wind was stronger, making it colder. The students did have fun, though, swimming and collecting what appeared to be jelly fish eggs. I'm not sure what they were exactly so will have to see if I can google it.

We came back to the beach house where Evan had cooked dinner for everyone! Taco salad with yummy carne asada. Thanks Evan! We also had time to sit in the hot tub and watch Indiana Jones!

Tomorrow, we head into Portland to sight see and explore!
