I am very thrilled to have to had the privilege to go on this trip. We got to go to three museums, and one, The OMSI, was my favorite. It is so hands on and there are lots of games to play that focus on teaching in a fun way. My mother is a special ed teacher and she would have loved it! We also got to go to a movie about Lewis and Clark, and to go on a tour of a submarine. It must have sucked to squish in a small submarine for sixty days at a time, with no sunlight or clean clothes and almost no opportunity to shower, but it got me thinking about whether I should be on the Navy or not. It sounds very fun to volunteer for the army for sixty days, with gourmet food, ice cream, and to play with explosives, in spite of the risks they had. After OMSI, I went to Portland for some last minute souvenir shopping. I bought a CD at a record store, a bow tie, and a mask from an antique store. I loved the trip to Portland and hopefully we could go on another similar trip!

Last day here.
Today was the last full day we had in Portland. And it was one of the best days of the trip in my opinion. We woke up at our individual host families, ours made us waffles, and then met up at Jill's house before heading off to OMSI. While at OMSI we went on a tour of the submarine in Hunt for Red October. It was a super cool experience seeing all the gadgets, bunks and such. After we saw the sub we went to the building room and played with all the hands on exhibits. Leah and I built a skate park, we were really, really good at it. After that we went and saw a movie on Lewis and Clark in an IMAX show so intense it made me dizzy. Than we all packed up into our cars and went to down town Portland one more time, where we finished up shopping and ate at an amazing BBQ food cart. I'm sad the trip is ending but so happy it happened.

Today I had a great time with my friends strolling the streets of Portland and visiting the OMSI.
The OMSI was a really cool place. We got to tour a submarine that was used in the movie, Hunt For Red October, then we went to down town Portland were I went to a fantastic record store and antique shop where me and my friends all got masks and bow ties.
I am disappointed the this trip is over. I am really exited for the trips to come.
I want to say thank you to every one who helped make this trip possible. Thank You all!

Portland Oregon.
Today, was our last day in Portland Oregon. The activities we participated in were extraordinary. The part I enjoyed most was walking around town walking in the cheap little stores down town.
For lunch we walked by food stands that were cheaper, and also better. The buildings here are so nice, and so clean. A lot of the streets have recycle trash cans. Most of the streets do not have garbage all over. The people there are very fashionable. I wish the transportation system where I live was more like the way Portland provides their transportation. We also went to OMSI museum. We went is the U.S.S Blueback submarine that has entertaining history that was interesting to listen too. It is our last day here, and I hope we can come back next year.

Our fantastical journey in this wonderland.
Today was a good day. We partied in the car, it was good. As we drove to the Omsi Museum we waved and said 'hello' to random people. Once we got to Omsi museum we went into the submarine and explored the squishy situation. We learned a lot about why and how the submarines were built. The tour guide for the group I was in was really funny. After we finished with the submarine we went to the ride thing and watched a video. Then we went into the dome theater and watched a Lewis and Clark movie that we had already watched in Bev's class. Then we went shopping, it was cool.

Lewis and Clark Focus Day
What a day! We got a late start today after various delays, but finally made it on the road to Seaside to see the Salt Works, the site where Lewis and Clark sent 3 men to make salt for the return trip, and then to Astoria to see Fort Clatsop, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition stayed the winter in 1805-'06.
After the Fort, we went into downtown Astoria and split up for lunch. Some of us had fish and chips at the best place-Bowpicker. Their fish was Albacore Tuna instead of cod and it was delicious!! We ate outside since the Bowpicker was actually a fixed up fishing boat.
After lunch, we took the kids across the Astoria Bridge (@4miles long!) into Washington. We were really excited when we thought we saw a whale, but then were really disappointed when we realized it was only a large log floating by. Once in Washington, we turned around and headed back into Oregon.
We visited the Astoria Column, a tall tower with 164 spiral steps. The students ran all the way up! On top on the observation deck, some of us were able to fly some balsa wood gliders. One stayed up for several minutes! It was so fun to watch! Some students were so excited to see the gliders being thrown off the top of the tower, they started asking about other various items they might be allowed to throw. After getting "no" repeated to them until we sounded like a broken record, they stopped asking and just went down the stairs.
From there, we drove the 2 hours back to the beach house where the students went back to spend some time on the beach. We thought tonight would be warmer than last, but the wind was stronger, making it colder. The students did have fun, though, swimming and collecting what appeared to be jelly fish eggs. I'm not sure what they were exactly so will have to see if I can google it.
We came back to the beach house where Evan had cooked dinner for everyone! Taco salad with yummy carne asada. Thanks Evan! We also had time to sit in the hot tub and watch Indiana Jones!
Tomorrow, we head into Portland to sight see and explore!

Wednesday
As we started out the day I woke up at about 4:45.We got in the cars and fell asleep listening to my friends conversations. As we were driving across the bridge to Washington, I smelt the fresh air and high fived one of the light workers. As we got back and got to this tower.I got up to the top and watched as McKay and Wendi threw their planes off.As soon as we got back we went straight to the beach as I watched as my friend get married to his fiance, then jumped in the freezing cold water and found baby jellyfish. Then finished out the night by getting in the hot tub and watching Indiana Jones.

Wednesday
Today, We went to the site where Lewis and Clark's group boiled ocean water to get the salt from the water (After going a month without salt). When we got to Fort Clatsop we had to wait a few minutes before we went into a room and whatched a movie about Lewis and Clark when they were staying with the Clatsop indians. During the movie there was a Native American woman who kept exagerating most of the words. Once the movie was over, we went to a re-creation of the fort. Later that day we went to a tower, which was on the top of a hill. Once we climbed what seemed like thousands of steps we finally got to the top where Wendi and McKay threw airplanes into the air. After that we got back to the beach house and walked to the beach. Where Kort married his now "wife", Sunflash. Today was a very interesting day. I'm pretty sure tomorrow will be just as fun.

its a beautiful day:)
Today was grand! We went to acrose a huge bridge to Washington. Then we went to a tower. The tower was huge! The 164 spiral stairs got so tiring on the way up and on the way down you felt like you were going to faint. The thing I liked best was getting fish and chips then getting cookie dough ice cream. Today was a blast cant wait for tomorrow.

Good Day
Today was a fun and eventful day! We had a fun and long drive. We went across a big ol' bridge to Washington. After that we went to a tower. The tower was big, in it there was 164 steps, and it took a long time to get up to the top. We ate yummy Asian food for lunch, I had a huge bowl of noodles.
After that i had an exciting looking bottle of soda. It was refreshing.

beach baby:)
Today we went to the beach in pacific city. The sun was setting and it couldn't be more perfect. We did handstands and cartwheels on the shore, played in the waves, looked for sand dollars and met some very interesting people. We got soaked and freezing and went back to the beach house, then jumped in the hot tub. Great day:)

As I started out the day waking everyone up at five ten thinking it was 6:10 then going down stairs and realizing that the breakfast place "the roost" was closed we went and watched 2 and 1/2 hours of Full House. After breakfast we loaded up and took off. At the next stop we were each given 20 dollars to spend freely. I got a large mocha frapuccino then came to the beach house. Walked on the beach with the freezing water I ran out to the waves. Came back shaking and getting loaded into a truck got to relax in a hot tub with the sunsetting...

May 16, 2011 (Day One)
Finally! The wonderful day has arrived! We met up at Walden at 7:30/8:00am and started piling up in the cars. The drivers are Shaunalei (my mom), Wendy (Leah's mom), and Wendi (our amazing CTE teacher). We left Provo, passed Salt Lake City, went into Idaho and then stopped for a pit stop in Twin Falls. The Twin Falls area had a big, deep canyon with a river at the bottom and lots of waterfalls pouring into it. Anyways, after making our pit stop we went went to some mall for lunch (I ate a Subway sammich). We finished our lunch and continued on our drive to Oregon. After many, many hours of complete madness we came into Oregon, but we still drove on. We drove through rainstorms, extremely thick pine woods, rolling hills, rainbows, farmland, cliffs, plains, etc. we finally arrived at our motel in Pendleton, but our day was still not finished. We threw our luggage into our room and crammed ourselves into the car once more. We drove to a casino (The Wild Horse Casino, which was still in the process of being built) and ate a wonderful, filling, buffet dinner. Then we drove back to the motel, again. We got everything ready and we feel asleep in our sweet, warm beds. The End.. of day one :)

day one
Today we hopped in the car and started our trip to Oregon. It was very fun. In my car we listened to music till we were out of the state then we watched "Spider Man" till we got there. We got our rooms, and went to an all you can eat buffet. Then we went back to the motel and went to sleep.

The drive to Pendleton was long, but also quite pretty. With all the snow and rain this past winter, spring has come and it is very green everywhere! Oregon was especially beautiful with forests, hills, and even an occasional elk off the side of the road. When we were nearing Pendleton, we came down the mountains and had a sweeping view of the entire valley and could see patchwork fields in various shades of green and brown. It was very much like a quilt my grandmother made!
For dinner, we took the students to a locally owned casino for their all you can eat buffet, but don't worry, we adults kept our eyes on them to make sure they stayed in the restaurant. We didn't have to worry, though. The food was delicious, and since everyone was hungry, they kept going back for more.
After dinner, we only had time for a few minutes of relax time with friends before the students were sent to bed. We are up early this morning so we can leave the hotel in time to drive 2 hours to make it to The Dalles where we will visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and learn a little about Lewis and Clark. After wards, we will make our way to the beach house in Pacific City.

The Night Before
"On the acquisition of Louisiana, in the year 1803, the attention of the Government of the United States was early directed towards exploring and improving the new territory. Accordingly, in the summer of the same year, an expedition was planned by the President for the purpose of discovering the courses and sources of the Missouri and the most convenient water communication thence to the Pacific ocean....Meriwether Lewis, and captain William Clark ...were associated in the command of this enterprise...the party consisted of: nine young men from Kentucky; 14 soldiers of the United States Army, two French watermen; and interpreter and hunter; and a black servant belonging to captain Clark....the party was to embark on board of three boats...two pirogues...two horses.." Nicholas Biddle
During the seventh year of the Walden School, in the year 2010, the attention of the staff at Walden was directed towards the end of year trips for the Jr. High in exploring and improving new territory. Accordingly, in the summer of the same school year, an expedition was planned by Wendi for the purpose of discovering the courses of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806 and the water way of the Columbia River thence to the Pacific Ocean. Wendi Frederickson along with 3 parent chaperons were associated in the command of this enterprise, the party consisting of 14 Jr. High students and one elementary student. The party is to embark on board of three vehicles in the morning. We hope you join us on our way through our writing of our adventures!
